How Often Do You Really Need To See A Gynecologist?

Everywhere you turn, you’ll hear people telling you to visit a gynecologist such as South Ave Women’s Services. Some people say you should go every few months, while others say that you should go every few years. So what’s the real deal? How often do you really need to visit a gynecologist? To answer this question, let’s examine some of the primary tools that gynecologists use to detect dangerous diseases: Pelvic Exam This is a fairly comprehensive examination that looks at the vast majority of a woman’s reproductive system in additional to the excretory system. Any obvious problems in the bladder, rectum, cervix, vulva, uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries will probably be caught in a pelvic exam. However, this isn’t always enough to detect some dangerous, long-term illnesses such as cancers. For that, you need a pap smear. The frequency at which you need to get a pelvic exam will actually vary from woman to woman. As it turns out, most women don’t actually need to get annual pelvic exams, as some sources might lead you to believe. However, this doesn’t apply to everyone. If you have a genetic predisposition to diseases or if you do develop symptoms of cervical cancer, then you will probably need to get pelvic exams more frequently than the average woman. Only your gynecologist will be able to tell you exactly how often you should visit Pap Smear In a pap smear, a small sample is taken from your cervix. Unlike a biopsy, there is no actual surgery involved. It may be a little uncomfortable, but your gynecologist will simply scrape a small number of cells from your cervix. A lab will then exam these cells to determine whether or not there is evidence of a cancerous growth. Unfortunately, a negative test result doesn’t always mean you are cancer free. You must be vigilant and get pap smears on a regular basis. In general, you do not need to get a pap smear if you are under 21, and you only need one every 3 years if you are under 65 years old. If you are over 65 and never had signs of cervical cancer, then you are no longer at risk of developing cervical cancer and thus no longer need to get pap smears.
